The Three Pagodas are among the oldest standing structures in south-western China

The Three Pagodas are among the oldest standing structures in south-western China. Clear weather permitting, they look especially pretty when reflected in the nearby Erhai Lake. The tallest of the three, Qianxun Pagoda, has 16 tiers that reach a height of almost 70 meters. The first Pagoda was originally erected in the middle of the 9th century, about the same time as the  Large Goose Pagoda and Small Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. On either side, the original pagoda is accompanied by two smaller 10 tiered pagodas, each standing at 42 meters high. There is also a temple behind the pagodas, known as Chongsheng Temple, which is laid out in a traditional Yunnan style--three layers of buildings lined up with a sacred peak in the background. Qianxun Pagoda is square with sixteen pent roofs above the huge first storey. The tubular interior is divided into sixteen storeys. The 59.6-metre-high pagoda is a typical multi-eave structure of the Tang Dynasty. The two-level pedestal supports a first storey with sides measuring 9.85 meters wide each. The method for piling up bricks for the sixteen-tier eaves was for the first layer to project from the wall. The second layer is in the shape of chevrons. The bricks then overlap one another, with each tier wider than the one below. Above the eaves are balconies. The eaves present smooth concave arcs, reflecting the style of Tang Dynasty pagodas. The contour of the whole pagoda is also in the shape of an elegant curve, with the top tapering off mildly, forming an excellent example of multi-eave pagodas in the Tang Dynasty. Sixteen-tier eaves are rarely seen in other pagodas.
The major pagoda, Qianxun Pagoda, was built in the period 824 to 839 in the Tang Dynasty. It is rectangular in shape; 69.13 meters high and divided into 16 tiers, while the two smaller ones, octagonal in shape have a height of 42.19 meters each and 10 tiers. In 1978 discovered during restoration efforts, are more than 600 cultural relics of the Tang and Song dynasties, including Buddhist scriptures, Buddhist statues, Buddhist musical instruments and copper mirrors. The renovation was completed in December 1980.
